Home phone service doesn’t run on copper anymore. Whether you’re with a big carrier or an independent provider, your landline almost certainly travels as data over the same connection as your Netflix and your work calls. That’s why a modern home phone costs a fraction of what it used to — and also why it can suddenly sound like the person on the other end is talking through a fan.

This guide explains how internet phone service actually works, what makes a call sound bad, and the specific fixes that work in Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan homes. Most call-quality problems have nothing to do with your phone plan and everything to do with your network.

How internet home phone works

VoIP — Voice over Internet Protocol — chops your voice into small packets, sends them across the internet, and reassembles them at the other end. Instead of a dedicated circuit held open for the duration of the call, your voice shares the road with every other device in the house.

In a typical home setup, an adapter (ATA) or a voice port built into your router connects your existing cordless phone to the network. You keep your handsets, your number and your wall jacks; only the transport changes.

How much bandwidth does a phone call use?

Startlingly little. A standard VoIP call consumes roughly 85–100 kbps in each direction with the common G.711 codec — about 0.1 Mbps. HD voice (G.722) is similar. Compressed codecs like G.729 drop to around 30 kbps.

Put that against a 300 Mbps plan and a phone call uses about one thirty-thousandth of your download capacity. Speed is almost never the reason a call sounds bad. Which is why “just upgrade your plan” is usually the wrong advice.

The four things that actually wreck call quality

1. Jitter — the real culprit

Jitter is variation in packet arrival time. Voice packets are sent every 20 milliseconds and need to arrive on that rhythm. When they bunch up and straggle, the receiving device either waits (adding delay) or discards latecomers (creating gaps). Under 30 ms of jitter is comfortable; above 50 ms you hear it as choppiness or robotic voice.

2. Packet loss

Lost packets are lost audio. Voice codecs conceal a little of it, but past roughly 1% loss you get clipped syllables and words that vanish mid-sentence. Target under 0.5%.

3. Latency

One-way delay under 150 ms is imperceptible. Beyond that you get the awkward satellite-interview effect where both people start talking at once. Fibre and cable connections in Western Canada sit comfortably under this; fixed-satellite links often don’t. Our latency and ping explainer goes deeper.

4. Upload congestion

This is the one that catches people. Your call needs only 0.1 Mbps up, but if a cloud backup, a big file transfer or three simultaneous video calls saturate a modest upload channel, your voice packets queue behind them. Cable plans have far less upload than download, so an upload-heavy household is the classic profile for a phone that works fine all day and falls apart at 8 p.m. Fibre’s symmetrical upload removes this failure mode almost entirely.

Fixes, in the order worth trying

Plug the phone adapter in with a cable

If your ATA or voice-enabled router sits on Wi-Fi, move it to Ethernet. Wi-Fi introduces jitter every time it retries a frame, and voice is the least forgiving traffic in the house. A single $8 cable resolves more call-quality complaints than anything else on this list.

Turn on QoS and prioritise voice

Most modern routers can prioritise a device or traffic class. Give the phone adapter top priority. Where available, enable Smart Queue Management (SQM/fq_codel) — it targets bufferbloat, the queueing delay that makes calls degrade precisely when the household gets busy. It is the single most effective router setting for voice.

Fix the Wi-Fi if you use a cordless base or softphone

Cordless handsets talking to a Wi-Fi-connected base, or apps like Teams and WhatsApp calling, inherit every Wi-Fi problem you have. If you have coverage gaps, the mesh Wi-Fi approach is usually better than an extender, which halves throughput and adds a hop of latency.

Keep the DECT base away from the router

Cordless phone bases and Wi-Fi routers stacked on the same shelf is a common Canadian household arrangement and a mildly bad idea. DECT operates near 1.9 GHz in Canada, so it doesn’t collide with Wi-Fi directly, but the power supplies and metal shielding still cause interference. Half a metre of separation is enough.

Check the line, not the phone

Power outages and 911: read this part

Old copper landlines carried their own power from the exchange and worked when the lights went out. An internet phone does not. No power to your modem, router and adapter means no dial tone — including no 911.

Given Prairie winter storms and rural feeder outages, this deserves a plan:

  • Keep at least one charged mobile phone in the house as the emergency fallback.
  • Register your service address. VoIP 911 routes based on the address on file, not the physical location of the call. If you moved the adapter to the cabin or a new house and didn’t update it, emergency services get sent to the old address. Update it the day you move.
  • Know whether your provider offers full 911 or basic/limited 911 in your area, which affects how the call is routed and answered.

Rural and acreage considerations

Voice is the most demanding traffic type in the house in terms of consistency, which makes it a good stress test for rural links. Fixed wireless usually handles calls well if the signal is stable — jitter tracks weather and tree growth more than distance. Geostationary satellite adds 500+ ms of unavoidable round-trip delay, which makes conversation genuinely awkward; low-earth-orbit services are far better but can still show jitter spikes during handovers. Should you keep a home phone at all?

A fair question when everyone has a mobile. The cases where it still earns its keep:

  • Weak cellular coverage — common in river valleys, basements and much of rural Western Canada. A Wi-Fi-connected home phone works where bars don’t.
  • A number your family and community already know — worth keeping, and it ports over.
  • Older parents or kids — a fixed handset in a known place beats hunting for a mobile in an emergency.
