Most people fix slow WiFi by buying something. Before you do that, move your router. Placement is free, takes ten minutes, and in a typical Canadian house it changes signal strength more than upgrading from a good router to a slightly better one. Radio waves obey physics, and physics doesn’t care how much you spent.
This guide covers where the router should go, where it absolutely shouldn’t, how to aim the antennas, and how to verify you actually improved something instead of just moving furniture around.
Why placement matters more than specs
Your router broadcasts in roughly a flattened sphere, strongest sideways and weakest straight up and down. Every material that signal passes through absorbs some of it. Rough attenuation, worst to best:
- Metal and mirrors — near-total reflection. Furnace ducting, steel appliances, metal-mesh security doors, mirrored closet doors.
- Concrete and brick — severe. A basement foundation wall can cost you most of a band.
- Water — severe. Aquariums, water heaters, and yes, a crowded room full of people.
- Tile, stone, plaster with wire lath — heavy.
- Drywall, wood, glass — mild. Two or three interior walls is usually fine.
This is also why the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands behave so differently from 2.4 GHz. Higher frequencies carry more data but penetrate walls less. The five placement rules
1. Central and high
Put the router as close to the middle of your home’s floorplan as the wiring allows, and get it up off the floor — roughly chest height or higher on a shelf. Signal radiates outward and slightly downward, so a router on a main-floor shelf covers both the main floor and the basement better than one sitting on the basement carpet covering only itself.
2. Out in the open, not in a cabinet
The single most common Canadian setup is also the worst: router shoved into the basement utility room next to the furnace, inside a media cabinet, or behind the TV. Metal cabinet, ductwork, and a large flat screen all block signal. An open shelf on a wall beats an enclosed cabinet every time, and it runs cooler — a hot router throttles.
3. Away from interference sources
Keep at least a couple of metres between the router and microwaves, cordless phone bases, baby monitors, Bluetooth speakers and older wireless security systems. All of them crowd the 2.4 GHz band. Microwaves in particular can flatten 2.4 GHz throughput while running.
4. Think in three dimensions
In a two-storey home, the ideal spot is often on the main floor ceiling-adjacent shelf or high on a wall — it covers upstairs bedrooms and the main level at once. In a bungalow with a finished basement, main-floor placement near the stairwell works well, because the open stairwell is a signal highway between floors. 5. Aim coverage at people, not at square footage
Perfect geometric centring is less useful than biasing toward where devices actually live: the living room, home office and main bedrooms. A garage or unfinished storage room doesn’t need 800 Mbps.
Antenna orientation, properly explained
External antennas on consumer routers are omnidirectional dipoles. They radiate outward perpendicular to the antenna’s length — think of a doughnut of signal around the antenna, with a null directly off the tip. That leads to three practical rules:
- Single storey: stand all antennas straight up. The doughnut spreads horizontally across your floor, which is what you want.
- Two or three storeys: mix it. Set some vertical and lay others horizontal or at 45°. Vertical antennas cover the same floor; horizontal ones project the doughnut upward and downward.
- Never point an antenna at the room you want to cover. The tip is the dead spot. Aiming antennas like little cannons at your bedroom is the most common mistake.
Devices also have antennas — another reason signal strength varies. A phone in a jeans pocket, a laptop with a metal chassis, or a smart TV mounted flat against a wall all report worse signal than the same device out in the open. Special cases in Western Canadian homes
The modem is in the wrong place
Often the coax or fibre entry point is in a basement corner, so that’s where the modem sits. You don’t have to leave the WiFi there. Two clean fixes: run a single Ethernet cable from the modem to a better-placed router (best possible option, and Cat6 is cheap), or put the modem in bridge/pass-through mode and place your router upstairs. In-floor heating and concrete
Radiant in-floor systems mean embedded metal mesh or piping in concrete slabs — a near-perfect signal blocker between floors. Homes like these almost always need wired backhaul to a second access point rather than a single router.
Acreages, shops and detached garages
Don’t try to punch WiFi across a yard. A directional outdoor access point or a buried/direct-burial Ethernet run to the shop is the only reliable answer over any real distance. Older homes with plaster and lath
Pre-1950s homes in older Edmonton and Calgary neighbourhoods often have wire-lath plaster walls, which behave like a metal screen. Expect to need a second access point rather than a stronger single router.
Verify before and after
Do not trust the bars on your phone. Measure:
- Pick three test spots — the worst room, a middle room, and next to the router.
- Run a speed test three times per spot and record the median, plus the signal strength in dBm if your device shows it. Useful benchmarks: −50 dBm excellent, −60 good, −70 marginal, −80 effectively unusable.
- Move the router, wait two minutes for devices to reconnect, and repeat the same tests.

When placement can’t fix it
Move the router first, then consider hardware. Placement won’t help if:
- Your home is over roughly 2,000 sq ft spread across three levels — you need multiple access points, full stop.
- The layout is long and narrow, with the entry point at one end.
- Concrete, brick or wire-lath walls divide the space.
- Your plan speed is genuinely too low for the household. No amount of antenna tuning creates bandwidth that isn’t there.

Where is the best place to put a WiFi router?
Central to your floorplan, elevated to chest height or higher, out in the open, and biased toward the rooms where you actually use devices. Avoid basements, closed cabinets, metal shelving and spots next to microwaves or furnace ductwork.
Should router antennas point up or sideways?
All vertical for a single-storey home. In a multi-storey home, mix vertical and horizontal — vertical antennas cover the same floor, horizontal ones push signal up and down. Never point an antenna tip at the room you want to cover; that’s the weakest direction.
Does putting the router in the basement really hurt WiFi?
Yes, significantly. Concrete foundation walls, floor joists and nearby ductwork absorb and reflect signal, and coverage upstairs suffers. Running one Ethernet cable to a main-floor router is the cheapest real fix.
How far can WiFi reach through walls?
Indoors, 2.4 GHz typically holds up through two or three drywall walls; 5 GHz through one or two; 6 GHz is best kept to the same room or one wall away. Concrete, brick, tile and metal cut all of those ranges sharply.
Will a stronger router fix dead zones?
