Your WiFi works fine in the living room and dies about four steps onto the deck. In the detached garage it’s a single bar that refuses to load anything. Out at the shop or the barn, forget it.
Outdoor coverage is one of the most common complaints we hear from customers across Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan — and it’s also one of the most fixable. This guide covers what actually works for patios, garages, shops, RV pads and acreages, roughly in order of cost.
Why WiFi falls apart the moment you step outside
Three things are working against you.
Walls, and specifically the wrong walls. An interior drywall partition costs you a few decibels. An exterior wall with insulation, sheathing and siding costs far more — and if that wall has low-E window coating or foil-faced insulation, it behaves close to a mirror for WiFi. Stucco over wire lath is worse still: the mesh acts like a Faraday cage.
Frequency band tradeoffs. The 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands carry the speed but have the worst range and the worst wall penetration. The 2.4 GHz band travels much further and is what usually reaches your patio — which is why outdoor speeds feel slow even when you have “signal.”
No reflections outdoors. Indoors, signal bounces off walls and ceilings and fills the space. Outside, there’s nothing to bounce off. Signal leaves your router and keeps going. Coverage drops off much faster than people expect.
The result: a phone showing two bars on the deck may still be nearly unusable, because the connection is limping along on 2.4 GHz at a very low data rate.
Step 1: Free fixes — move the router before you buy anything
Do this first. It costs nothing and sometimes solves the whole problem.
- Move the router toward the side of the house you want covered. If your patio is out back and the router is in the front office closet, you’re asking the signal to cross the entire house plus an exterior wall.
- Get it up and out in the open. Basement-corner routers behind a filing cabinet are the single most common cause of bad outdoor coverage. Main floor, elevated, unobstructed.
- Aim antennas deliberately. External antennas radiate outward from their sides, not from their tips. Angling one horizontally pushes signal downward and outward — useful for covering a yard from a second floor. Our router placement and antenna guide covers this in detail.
- Point through a window, not a wall. A patio door is a far better path for WiFi than the stucco wall beside it.
Test properly before and after: run a speed test standing where you actually want to use the connection, not from the doorway.
Step 2: Extend coverage to a deck, patio or nearby yard
If the fix above gets you close but not quite there, you’re in mesh territory.
A mesh node placed in the room nearest the patio, ideally within sight of a window or patio door, is the standard answer. It’s a genuinely different approach from an old-style extender, which halves throughput and creates a second network name. We compared the options in extenders vs mesh vs powerline.
Two rules that make or break a mesh deployment:
- Place the node halfway, not at the dead zone. A node that can barely hear the main router will rebroadcast a barely-usable signal. Put it where coverage is still solid, pointed at the gap.
- Wire the backhaul if you can. A mesh node fed by an Ethernet cable performs dramatically better than one relying on a wireless hop. Even one cable run to a strategic spot changes everything.
For most decks, patios, front yards and small back yards on a city lot in Calgary or Red Deer, a well-placed mesh node is the entire solution.
Step 3: Detached garages, shops and outbuildings
Here’s where people waste money. Standing in a detached garage 15 metres from the house, you’re asking the signal to cross two exterior walls — often one of them metal-clad. Indoor gear rarely does this well.
Best option: bury a cable
If you can get direct-burial outdoor-rated Ethernet (or better, fibre) from the house to the outbuilding, do it. Put a small access point at the far end and the garage gets full speed, permanently. It’s the least glamorous option and by far the best one.
Two practical notes: use outdoor/direct-burial rated cable, not the indoor patch cable from the drawer, and call before you dig — Alberta One-Call, BC 1 Call and Sask 1st Call are free.
Good option: a point-to-point wireless bridge
If trenching isn’t realistic, a pair of small outdoor wireless bridge units — one aimed at the other, mounted high on each building — creates a dedicated link between the two structures. They need clear line of sight, and they’ll comfortably cover distances that ordinary mesh can’t touch. You then plug a regular access point into the far end.
This is the standard fix for a shop 50–100 metres from the house, and it’s a common setup on acreages around Kelowna and across rural Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Also consider: outdoor-rated access points
An outdoor access point mounted under a soffit and pointed at the yard is a clean way to cover a large open area — pool, rink, RV pad, gathering space. Look for an IP-rated enclosure and a real temperature range. A prairie winter at -35°C will find any device that was specced for a milder climate. Most of these units use Power over Ethernet, so a single cable carries both data and power.
Step 4: Yards, acreages and everything past the fence
Covering a full acreage is a different exercise from covering a patio. A few realities:
- Trees are the enemy. Wet foliage absorbs high-frequency signal aggressively. A link that works in March may fail in July when the leaves come in. Plan paths around trees, not through them.
- Height wins. Every metre of mounting height buys more usable range than almost any other change. Soffits, gable ends and rooftops beat fence posts.
- Chain your links. House → shop → far barn works better than trying one heroic long shot from the house.

Weatherproofing: the part that fails in year two
Outdoor networking gear rarely fails because of the electronics. It fails at the connections.
- Use a drip loop. Let the cable hang below the connector so water runs off instead of tracking into the port.
- Seal outdoor RJ45 connections with the weatherproof boot that came with the unit, or self-amalgamating tape. Electrical tape unwinds within a season.
- Use UV-rated cable outdoors. Standard PVC jacket goes chalky and cracks after a couple of Alberta summers.
- Add surge protection on any cable run between buildings. A buried or aerial run between two structures is an excellent lightning antenna. An inline Ethernet surge protector is inexpensive insurance for the gear on both ends.
- Mind the cold. Battery-powered outdoor devices — cameras, doorbells, sensors — lose a large share of their capacity below -20°C. Wired power is worth the extra effort out here.
Don’t forget security
Outdoor coverage by definition puts your network signal past your property line. Two sensible precautions:
- Use WPA3 (or WPA2 with a long, unique passphrase — not the sticker default).

Start with a connection worth extending
All of this assumes the internet coming into the house is solid to begin with. If your indoor speeds already disappoint, extending them outdoors just spreads the problem over more square metres.
