Internet for Apartments and Condos: Plans, Setup and Moving In

Moving into an apartment or condo and need internet set up? Most buildings across Alberta and BC are already wired for cable, and many newer buildings have fibre. Get WiFi plans run on those same lines, so getting connected is usually just a matter of choosing a speed and plugging in.

The short answer: check which jack is in your unit (cable or fibre), confirm service at your address, pick a speed that fits how many people live with you, and set it up yourself in a few minutes. Every Get WiFi plan comes with unlimited data and your modem and WiFi included, and cable plans have no contract, which fits a lease.

How to Get Internet in Your Apartment in 4 Steps

1. Find out what is wired to your unit

Look for a round coaxial (cable) jack on the wall, usually in the living room or a bedroom. Newer buildings may have a fibre jack or a small fibre box in a closet or the suite's network panel. If you can't find one, ask your building manager where the internet comes into your suite and whether the building has a bulk internet agreement.

2. Confirm service at your address

Text or call 780-665-4771, or email internet@getenergy.ca, with your full address including the unit number. We will confirm which plans your building qualifies for, usually the same day. Cable is available across most of Alberta and BC and in select Saskatchewan cities; fibre is available in select areas.

3. Pick a speed that fits your household

Apartments rarely need the fastest plan. Match the speed to the number of people and screens:

Plan Speed Good for
Internet 50 (cable) Up to 50 Mbps down / 50 up Studios and 1-bedrooms, 1–2 people
Internet 100 (cable) Up to 100 Mbps down / 100 up 2–3 people, HD streaming on a couple of screens
Internet 300 (cable) Up to 300 Mbps down / 200 up Busy suites: 4K streaming, gaming, working from home
Internet 1000 (cable) Up to 1 Gbps down / 200 up Heavy streaming and gaming
Fibre 1000 Up to 1 Gbps down and up Large uploads and home offices, where fibre is available (2-year term)

Prices and current offers are on our plans page. Not sure which speed fits? Our streaming speed guide works it out by household.

4. Set it up

Outside Fort McMurray, we ship your modem and a Deco mesh WiFi unit for free self-install: connect the modem to the wall jack, plug in the Deco, and you are online. In Fort McMurray, delivery and setup are free. Fibre installs are completed by a technician. Book a week or two before your move-in date so you are connected when the keys arrive.

Why Renters Like a No-Contract Plan

Leases end, roommates change and buildings get sold. Get WiFi cable plans have no contract, so you can cancel anytime with 30 days' notice instead of paying out a term you no longer need. If you move to another address we serve, we can move your service with you. Fibre 1000 is the exception: it is on a two-year term, so it suits you best if you plan to stay put.

Before you sign up with any provider, ask about one-time sign-up fees, equipment deposits and what happens to the monthly price after any promotion ends. We will confirm all of these with you before anything is set up.

Getting Good WiFi in a Small Space

Apartment WiFi has its own problems: dozens of neighbouring networks on the same channels, concrete walls and a router stuck in a closet. A few fixes go a long way:

  • Put your router or main Deco in the open, near the middle of the suite and off the floor.
  • Use the 5 GHz band for streaming and video calls; it is far less crowded than 2.4 GHz in a busy building.
  • Run an Ethernet cable to a TV, console or desk computer if it sits near the router.
  • In a larger condo or a long, narrow suite, add a second Deco unit rather than a cheap extender.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose my own internet provider in an apartment?

Usually, yes. Most apartment and condo buildings are wired for cable, and many newer ones for fibre, so you can pick any provider that serves those lines. A few buildings include internet in the rent or condo fees through a bulk agreement. Check your lease or ask building management first, and if your unit has a working cable or fibre jack, you can still sign up for your own plan.

Do I need my landlord's permission to get internet?

Not for a standard plan that uses the jacks already in your unit. You only need permission if the installer has to drill, run new wiring or mount equipment outside your suite. Ask your building manager in that case.

Is there a contract on Get WiFi apartment internet?

Cable plans have no contract. You can cancel anytime with 30 days' notice, which suits a lease. Our Fibre 1000 plan is on a two-year term.

What internet speed do I need for an apartment?

For one or two people, 50 Mbps handles streaming, browsing and video calls. Two or three people sharing a suite are better on 100 Mbps, and a busy household that streams in 4K, games or works from home will be more comfortable on 300 Mbps or faster.

Can I take my internet with me when I move?

Yes, where we have service at your new address. Tell us your move date and new address and we will move the service for you.

Do you work with property managers?

We would be glad to talk. If you manage an apartment or condo building and want an easy way for new residents to get connected, call or text 780-665-4771 or email internet@getenergy.ca.
